PROCESS AND PROCEDURES

for Fire Resistive Class Rating Certification
(FRCR Certification)

PURPOSE:
As part of the requirements by the International Code Council, all No-Burn commercial product applications are required to be applied by No-Burn Certified Technicians and verified by a No-Burn Certified Inspector. This requirement is to ensure that applications meet all project scope requirements and building/fire code standards.

PROCESS:

• Product Approval
No-Burn products are approved by the International Code Council and follow the code process of Alternate Methods and Materials. It is important to review with the local Building and Fire Officials the intent of the use of the No-Burn products. A letter of request should be made by the architect of record, to outline what the No-Burn product is going to be applied to and what protection it is going to achieve (i.e.  Fire Protection to Wood Floor/Truss Webbing). If the No-Burn product is going to replace another specified product, then that also needs to be outlined. This letter request should be three copies, signed and sealed and include the appropriate product and test documentation.

A No-Burn SE (NBSE) representative will assist the Architect and/or Builder with providing all the proper No-Burn product information and test certifications necessary for Building/Fire Official approval. The NBSE representative will also be the No-Burn product and project knowledge liaison providing state wide Building and Fire references to help with the approval process for each project.

• Product Installation
Once the project has received approval from the Building and/or Fire Officials, a NBSE Project Manager will assist with all the schedule logistics and project preparation requirements.  A Certified NBSE Installation Team will be dispatched to the site and will prep the site for the spray application, which includes covering/protecting any specified components, i.e. sprinkler heads. The spray application utilizes commercial grade airless paint sprayers, so it minimizes other trades to be in the same area during application. **NOTE: No-Burn products are “green”, non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, therefore are not harmful to humans, animals or plants during or after installation. Toxicology reports are available upon request.
After the installation is complete, the NBSE Installation Team Lead contacts the NBSE Project Manager for inspection. The NBSE Inspector will be dispatched to review the application to verify it meets project scope requirements and Building/Fire Code requirements. If the NBSE Inspector finds any error with the application, the NBSE Installation Team will be dispatched to correct the error immediately.

• FRCR Certification
Once the project is inspected and passed, the NBSE Inspector fills out a matching serial numbered FRCR Registration Form and FRCR Certificate. In addition to the forms are two matching serial numbered holograms. One hologram is placed on the FRCR Certificate and the other is generally placed on the inside panel of the project electrical panel or an agreed upon structural location.

FRCR form

The FRCR Registration Form captures the detail information about the project and application. It also measures the level of No-Burn protection with a FRCR 1 through 7 rating. For example, an FRCR 1 protection would imply the entire structure is No-Burn protected.  An FRCR 7 would imply a unique portion of the structure, i.e. a wall or ceiling was No-Burn protected. The FRCR Registration Form also captures what type of substrate received the application and which No-Burn product was used. This form is a carbon copy which one copy is retained by NBSE and one copy is retained by No-Burn Corporate for database entry and filing.

FRCR certificate

The FRCR Certificate captures the project address and owner information, FRCR Rating, Date of Application and the Authorized No-Burn Representative License Number. The Certificate is a carbon copy document, where the project owner will receive the top white copy with the hologram, NBSE retains the yellow carbon copy for database entry and filing.

FRCR hologram

FRCR Hologram authenticates the certificate from being duplicated. The addition of the matching serial numbers on the holograms validates the certificate and the structure application documentation.

Upon completion of the project, the FRCR documents, scanned copies will be forwarded to the appropriate Building and/or Fire Official for verification of installation.

All the information in the FRCR Registration Form and FRCR Certificate are recorded into a database for serial number look up. This information is made available to Building and Fire Officials, insurance companies and other authorized entities through the NBSE website. This provides for future verification and data that may be necessary for proof of installation and insurance discounts.
